Myth-Busting the Complete Electrification Fairytale

electric home heat new jerseyWith the earth’s climate crisis raging and the effects becoming more and more apparent, many local governments are starting to take action. Unfortunately, eagerness to make a difference can sometimes result in hasty decision-making that ultimately doesn’t end up helping the situation. The rush to electrification in municipalities around the country is one example of well-intended efforts going awry.

Fredericks Fuel & Heating Service is one of the largest and most modern fuel oil and burner service companies serving Northern NJ. Our energy experts can help evaluate all of your fuel options. Read further to learn more about how the jump to complete electrification may not be the best move, for both the earth and your pocketbook.

Misunderstandings about greenhouse gas emissions

It’s true that electricity emits zero pollutants when in use. Electricity doesn’t burn fossil fuels when you turn on the lights or use an appliance. Sounds great, right? We need to look at the bigger picture in order to see what type of impact electricity has on the environment in total.

The problem is that electric plants burn fossil fuels in the generation of electricity – lots of fossil fuels. The more electricity is used, the more electricity needs to be generated, and the more harmful fumes released into our atmosphere.

Burdensome regulations can hurt the environment and more

Total electrification simply is not the silver-bullet solution that advocates want it to be. In a good-faith effort to reduce climate change, many governments put in place burdensome mandates and unfair incentives that hurt businesses, homeowners and landlords hesitant to jump on the total electrification bandwagon. And, the sad irony of the situation is that these efforts don’t even have the intended impact of reducing carbon footprint and harmful gas emissions!

Modern heating oil is a promising alternative to electrification

The future of oilheat is very promising, with biofuels and enhanced burner technology strengthening fuel efficiency, lowering costs, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions far below those associated with electricity plants.

No more run-outs or outages in the dead of winter!

Another major problem with total electrification is that customers become totally dependent upon the electric grid, which can be less than reliable. Heating oil delivery brings more security, and when you enroll in automatic delivery, we monitor your fuel use and make deliveries before there’s any chance of running out, which can be inconvenient and expensive. There is no extra charge for this service, and you will not use any more fuel than you would on will-call.

hvac filter new jerseyRoutine maintenance is the best way to keep your air conditioner running efficiently and reliably every year – but beyond a once-a-year check-up, one of the best ways to keep your central A/C running at peak efficiency is also the simplest: check your air filter once a month, and change (or clean) it when it’s dirty.

Here’s why: when an air filter clogs, it makes your air conditioner’s condenser (the outdoor unit of your central air unit) overwork to cool your home. Over time, that overwork can cause problems that include:

Air filters are inexpensive and take seconds to check and replace – so they’re a no-brainer investment of time and money for your home cooling system.

Have you changed your filters recently?

We Will Give You One Big Reason!

heating oil deliveryIt looks like we’re finally arriving at a point where we can give our heating equipment a well-earned rest for the summer, after a long, steady climb through an extended cool spring here in New Jersey.

But before you put your heating system to bed for a few months, we suggest doing two things, if you haven’t already: schedule routine maintenance and top of your tank with heating oil.

The first of these suggestions is probably obvious – after all, just about any home comfort equipment needs a little TLC to keep it running efficiently and reliably year after year. Why now? Simple: it will help you avoid the crowds in the fall.

The bigger question is why schedule a heating oil delivery when you’re not going to use your heating system for another few months?

The answer is to help keep your tank from corroding.

How Oil Tanks Corrode

As seasons change, water (condensation) forms inside your oil tank, the same way it forms on a cold glass during the summer. More water will form inside an empty tank than a full one.

That water is bad news for two reasons. The first is that water, being heavier than oil, will sink to the bottom of your tank and start the corrosion process from the inside out. That means you won’t necessarily see your tank rotting until it’s late in the game – maybe even too late.

The second is that a damp environment will encourage bacteria growth in your fuel. Over time, that bacteria will turn your heating oil into a thick sludge that will block your filter, fuel lines, and burner nozzle, eventually shutting down your heating system altogether.

As you can see, water build-up is not good for the inside of your tank (or your wallet) – and keeping oil in your tank during the offseason is an easy way to minimize it.

As a side bonus, ordering fuel now will probably help you save a few bucks, too, since heating oil prices are usually lower during the offseason.

Need to top off your heating tank this summer? We can help! Contact Fredericks Fuel & Heating Service today to schedule your heating oil delivery in NJ.

Do These 10 Things Before Cooling Season Begins

central air repair new jersey

Believe it or not, summer 2021 is only about one month away, and soon you will be turning to your air conditioner for cool comfort night and day (especially this year, which experts predict will be a scorcher here in the Northeast).

But don’t touch that dial just yet! Here are 10 things you should do before you start relying on your central air conditioning this summer.

  1. Check your thermostat. A thermostat is the brain of your home HVAC system – make sure it’s up and running properly, with fresh batteries. If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, you’re missing out on one of the easiest, most cost-effective ways to save on your summer cooling bills.
  2. Check your ductwork. Ducts are notorious leakers – in fact, as much as 15-20 percent of the air you paid to cool will never make it into your living space. Seal any obvious leaks and fix out-of-place duct joints in exposed ductwork areas. If you’ve had your central A/C system for five years or more, consider investing in professional duct sealing (since the majority of duct leaks in most homes happen behind the wall).
  3. Clear air vents. Move drapes, curtains, furniture, or anything else that prevents air from flowing freely from your vents.
  4. Check the drain line. A blocked drain line will divert water to other places – like back into your house or toward your foundation. Keep it clear!
  5. Check your filters. A clogged air filter does a number on efficiency, and the chronic overwork it causes could eventually do a number on your air conditioner itself. Check your air filter about once a month during peak cooling season, replacing it (or cleaning it, depending on the model) when needed.
  6. Check electrical connections. Issues with wiring could knock out power to your A/C. Check electrical connections and circuit breakers before summer starts.
  7. Clear debris from outdoor units. Check your outdoor condenser for leaves, twigs, nests, and other debris. Proper airflow is essential throughout the home cooling system chain.
  8. Check refrigerant lines. Insufficient refrigerant will make it impossible to generate cold air. Look for visible signs of a refrigerant leak, including poor cooling, ice on the evaporator coils, and fluid spots near your A/C condenser.
  9. If the time has come, don’t hesitate: replace your old A/C.  A 15-year-old air conditioner could have a SEER rating as low as 6 – a far cry from a new 15 SEER unit. That translates to hundreds of dollars in cooling bills over the course of a season – not to mention unreliable cooling on days when you need it most.
  10. Get professional maintenance. There is no better way to prepare your air conditioning unit for the season than to have it inspected and serviced by a qualified A/C specialist. An expert technician will replace worn parts, lubricate your system, check your refrigerant, and do all the little things that will keep your home cooling equipment running at its reliable best.

Summer is coming fast – be ready with expert air conditioning service from Fredericks Fuel. Contact us today to learn more about A/C installation and A/C maintenance in New Jersey!

Fredericks Service Plan Options

An investment in a Fredericks Heating Oil Service Plan will pay for itself now and later with lower bills and fewer costly repairs, so sign up for our of our high-value Plans today!

heating oil service new jerseyA heating oil furnace is a great option for your home – it can be installed in any town (no pipeline needed), your fuel is safe to use and deliver, and you will always know it can provide enough heat to withstand the most bitter New Jersey winter. Oil furnaces are built to last, too, with lifespans that can exceed 20 years with regular maintenance.

Sounds great, right – but what about efficiency?

Efficiency is indeed critical when choosing a furnace – the higher the efficiency, the lower your monthly fuel bills. So, are heating oil furnaces efficient? Let’s take a look.

AFUE: A Good Place To Start

One of the more important ways to measure efficiency in a furnace is AFUE, or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. The AFUE number assigned to your furnace compares how much fuel your equipment consumes to how much heat it produces for your home. In an 84 AFUE unit, 84 percent of the fuel your equipment burns heats air that will make it into your living space; the remaining 16 percent of that heat is lost somewhere along the way (usually as exhaust).

Most new oil furnaces have AFUE ratings between 84 percent (the legal minimum) and 90 percent. But if your furnace is old and not well maintained, your AFUE could drop into the 60s or even lower – a big reason why the decision to upgrade your older heating equipment often pays for itself pretty quickly.

…but AFUE Isn’t Enough!

Of course, AFUE doesn’t tell the whole efficiency story. For example, natural gas furnaces can have AFUE ratings that reach the upper 90s – but gas produces fewer BTUs per gallon than heating oil when burned, so whatever benefit you get from improved efficiency is offset by gas’ lower heating power. Proper heating system installation and maintenance are also extremely important pieces of the efficiency equation.

Oil Furnace Efficiency Summed Up

So is an oil furnace efficient? The answer is a qualified “yes, if…” If you have your furnace installed and regularly maintained by an expert, it can stand up to any furnace available today when it comes to providing heating bank for the buck. An older or poorly maintained heating oil furnace? Not so much.

If you’re not sure how well your furnace is performing, contact us – we can do a heating system inspection and run some tests to see if you’re getting the most value for your money from your current furnace, or if a high-efficiency replacement might be a better bet in the long run.

Need service to help your oil furnace run at peak efficiency – or a heating oil delivery in NJ to top off your tank? We can help. Contact the heating pros at Fredericks Fuel & Heating Service today to learn more about heating oil equipment service and installation in New Jersey!
