For this reason, on-road diesel is sometimes referred to as clear diesel.
• Taxes and fuel costs. Off-road fuel is cheaper than on-road diesel, because it is not subject to excise taxes, since the fuel isn’t used on public roadways.
• Performance. There’s no difference in the performance of vehicles using on-road versus off-road fuel. Vehicles can theoretically use either type of fuel – although it would not be in your best interest to use the fuels interchangeably. The reason is that it’s illegal to use off-road fuel in an on-road vehicle, and it’s unnecessarily expensive to use on-road fuel in an off-road vehicle, since you’d be paying taxes that you don’t actually owe.
