Storing Diesel Fuel Safely

Follow these helpful tips
Business owners who use diesel fuel in their trucks, buses, fleets of vehicles, excavators, pavers, generators, forklifts or tractors know that they need this type of fuel to get certain equipment and machinery to actually operate and function. In fact, without diesel fuel they sometimes wouldn’t even be able to get their basic jobs done.
But when diesel fuel is not actually in a vehicle or a piece of equipment where should it go and be kept?
Safe storage tips for diesel fuel
When it comes to storing diesel fuel there are certain safety precautions and measures that anyone and everyone should follow to stay out of harm’s way. Here is a look at what they are:
- Store diesel fuel at room temperature and in an area that is a safe distance away from any potential heat sources (this includes any kind of heaters and furnaces) and at least 50 feet away from anything that is potentially flammable.
- Keep diesel fuel out of direct sunlight.
- Only put diesel fuel in portable tanks, safety cans or other containers that are approved by the Department of Transportation.
- If you have fuel that has been in storage for more than 30 days, add a fuel stabilizer to it to stop microbial growth and compounds from getting in it. You should also add new fuel to this supply.
- Do not fill your diesel fuel storage container past the 95% full mark. Leaving a little extra room in your tank gives you the necessary space you need for the fuel to expand (which is bound to naturally happen).
- Label your containers with the date that they were filled so you know when the diesel fuel that is inside expires.
It is important to know how you can safely store diesel fuel so that you can have feel secure about having a supply right at your worksite. This helps increase productivity for your business – no one will have to put a pause in his or her work to find a place to fill up on diesel fuel!
