Maximize your heater with these suggestions from Fredericks Fuel
Once winter arrives here in Northern New Jersey one thing is for certain – you want your home heating system to work efficiently and keep your home and everyone in it warm.
If you feel like your home heating system is not working as effectively as it used to, it may be time to upgrade your equipment. New heater models are automatically more efficient and effective compared to older versions.
However, upgrading is not the only option, especially if your heater is not yet that old and worn out. In fact, there are actually plenty of things that a homeowner can do to help improve the efficiency of his or her heater. Keep reading to find out what they are.
What you can do to increase your heater’s efficiency
Follow the below tips from Fredericks Fuel to help maximize your home heating system:
- Make sure your vents aren’t blocked: Clear your vents to ensure that there aren’t any household items, like furniture and curtains or debris and dirt blocking them. This will allow for heated air to properly flow throughout your home.
- Take care of your filters: We recommend cleaning your filters once a month. This will also help with sufficient airflow. You should also replace your filters as necessary.
- Winterize your home: Before winter officially arrives here in Northern New Jersey, make sure you properly prepare your home for the cold weather. Add insulation to keep the warm air that comes from your heater indoors. Apply caulk around any doors and windows that have cracks to keep warm air from escaping.
- Use the sun: Keeping your drapes and curtains open on a sunny day is a way to help your home feel warmer without having to increase the temperature on your thermostat. Just make sure you close your curtains and drapes once the sun goes down – this will help keep the warmth that came in during the day inside.
- Be smart about your thermostat’s settings: It is recommended to keep your thermostat set to between 68 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. To keep your heater from blasting and using up unnecessary energy and fuel when no one is home, lower your thermostat’s temperature to between 62 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. We recommend using this same lower temperature for when you are sleeping for the night as well.
