How do I prevent diesel fuel gelling in cold weather?
Posted: December 23, 2024

Don’t let chilly temperatures impact your fuel

diesel Sparta, NJDriving in intense winter weather here in North New Jersey can be less than ideal. Cold temperatures and the resulting snowstorms that sometimes come along with them can create all sorts of headaches and hassles such as intense traffic, icy roads and issues with your vehicle. These vehicle issues can include problems with your diesel fuel, including gelling.

What happens to diesel fuel in cold weather

Diesel fuel is made with something called paraffin wax, which is meant to amplify lubrication and help with the fuel’s consistency. However, once the weather switches from cool and mild to pretty cold (around 32 degrees Fahrenheit), this paraffin wax gets thicker and turns into small sized crystals. In cold temperatures, these crystals can stick to your vehicle’s fuel filter and then end up blocking your engine from getting the fuel it needs to run and operate.

If temperatures get as low as about 10 or 15 degrees Fahrenheit paraffin wax can start to gel. When gelling occurs the wax basically starts hardening and, as a result, your diesel fuel becomes cloudy. This can cause clogged fuel filters, which can lead to a vehicle’s engine not working correctly or, in extreme circumstances, not working at all.

How to determine if your diesel fuel has gelled

Any of the following signs can indicate that your diesel fuel has turned into gel:

Nobody wants to be stuck with a vehicle that isn’t working properly, which is why you should do everything in your power to prevent your diesel fuel from gelling. You can do this by adding cold-weather and anti-gelling additives to your fuel.

Additional care tips for your diesel fuel
