Diesel Fuel and Emissions: Advancements in Clean Diesel Technology

How diesel fuel has become more environmentally friendly

diesel Sparta, NJCountless industries are doing their part to help out the environment and the diesel fuel industry is no exception. In fact, some major changes have been made to diesel fuel over the years. These changes make the energy source cleaner, greener and more eco-friendly.

A snapshot of diesel fuel’s history

Like so many of the fuels that we buy and use, diesel fuel produces harmful emissions when it is burned. This makes a vehicle that is powered with diesel fuel a source of pollutants, including particulate matter.

While this is certainly a problem, the good news is that something is being done about it.

Diesel fuel used to have up to 5,000 parts per million (PPM for short) of sulfur. However, back in 1993, the United States Environmental Protection Agency started to regulate the amount of sulfur that is added to diesel fuel.

By 2006, regulations were put in place that decreased the amount of sulfur in diesel fuel to 15 parts per million. This is how ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel developed.

As of 2010, the United States Environmental Protection Agency has required that all on-road diesel fuel highway vehicles use ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel. By 2014, this same rule was put in place for off-road vehicles as well as locomotive and marine engines.

Where diesel fuel stands now

There have been significant positive changes under these new guidelines and regulations. In fact, there has been a decrease of harmful emissions by up to about 90% between both on-road and off-road vehicles that are powered with diesel fuel.

Here in the state of New Jersey, the Department of Environmental Protection has created the Diesel Enforcement Project in an effort to reinforce restrictions and regulations when it comes to diesel-powered vehicles and machinery.

The Diesel Enforcement Projects requires that publicly owned vehicles that use diesel fuel have to use diesel particulate filters as well as an emission control apparatus. On-road diesel fuel vehicles are also subject to professional inspections that look at emissions from time to time.

How drivers can reduce diesel fuel emissions

People who drive vehicles or use equipment that run on diesel fuel can do their part to reduce harmful emissions as well.

First, you can use fuel additives. Not only do these help keep your fuel system clean, but they also help improve combustion.

We also recommend that you focus on reducing your idling time. This is a waste of fuel, energy and resources.

Additionally, if you are driving a vehicle that is powered with diesel fuel do your best to avoid driving during rush hour and take the most direct routes that are available. This will help conserve fuel.
