How to Program Your Central Air Conditioning Thermostat
Posted: May 27, 2025

Learn all about your thermostat’s settings

central air conditioning Riverdale, NJJust because you have your home’s central air conditioning turned on does not necessarily mean that it is actually keeping you comfortable and working efficiently. Having an AC system that works efficiently and does its job properly is nothing particularly complicated, but it does take a little bit of effort. One simple way to boost efficiency and effectiveness when it comes to your central air conditioning is by programming it properly.

The ins and outs of programming your thermostat

What does it even mean to properly program your thermostat? It basically just means setting it to the ideal temperature for your home and then making any necessary adjustments that best serve your schedule. It’s simple.

However, properly programming your thermostat is about more than just energy-efficiency and comfort. A homeowner who utilizes proper thermostat settings can actually reduce his or her energy costs. By making some small tweaks to the way you use your thermostat, the U.S. Department of Energy estimates that you can end up saving about 10% on your home’s cooling costs.

Your home can accomplish this too! Here’s a look at how.

A home can usually feel comfortable with a thermostat that is set to between 72 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit in the summertime. This may be a higher number than you would have expected, but it is actually not recommended to drop your thermostat’s temperature too much, even when it is warm outside.

When you are home and awake in the winter set your thermostat’s temperature to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are going to be out of the house for hours and hours drop the temperature down from your normal setting by about seven to 10 degrees. Do the same thing right before you go to sleep.

Try not to constantly change your thermostat’s temperature. Alternatively, try to stay at one consistent setting.

Is it time to upgrade your central air conditioning?

If you are finding that your house is not staying or getting cool no matter what you have your thermostat programmed to, it may be time for an upgrade.

Modern central air conditioning systems are specifically designed to be more efficient than older versions. This will help your home feel comfortable while simultaneously reducing your energy bills.

Some modern central air conditioning systems can be connected to a smart thermostat. These allow you to preset the temperature inside different zones in your house. Additionally, you can use an app on your phone to make any temperature adjustments.
