No heat? Check These Five Things Before Calling For Service
Posted: February 17, 2020

no heat what to check before calling heating serviceYour home heating system has been on the job for more than four months straight since those first cool fall nights in NJ, and with that kind of workload it’s always possible that you’ll have an issue at some point with your furnace or boiler – especially if it’s an older unit.

If that happens, don’t worry – the experts at Fredericks Fuel are here with the technicians, equipment, genuine replacement parts and expertise to fix just about heating problem, and we’re here 24/7 for emergency heating repairs.

But before you contact us for heating service, it’s a good idea to do a little detective work to potentially save yourself the cost of an unnecessary heating repair visit – in many cases, your problem may be something that you can correct yourself.

If you lose your heat, take these steps before you call for service:

  1. Make sure the temperature on your thermostat is set at least five degrees above the current room temperature, and the system switch is on the HEAT or AUTO position. The fan switch should be set to ON for continuous airflow or AUTO.
  2. Check the power/disconnect switch.
  3. Check the fuses/circuit breakers for both the outdoor and indoor unit.
  4. If you have a furnace or heat pump,
    • Check the air filter if airflow from your vent seems low
    • Make sure all vents are open and not blocked.
    • Make sure the gas control valve to the furnace is open.
  5. If you have a boiler,
    • Check to make sure you have fuel oil

If you take all of the above steps and your heat still doesn’t work, contact Fredericks Fuel right away and we will send a technician to figure out the problem – and to make it right as quickly as possible.
